An American soldier who had been killed during the Vietnam War is revived 25 years later by the military as a semi-android, UniSols, a high-tech soldier of the future. After the failure of the initiative to erase all the soldier's memories, he begins to experience flashbacks that are forcing him to recall his past.

Plot Introduction
"Universal Soldier" (1992) is a sci-fi film directed by Roland Emmerich which merges components of action, war drama, and thriller. The storyline focuses on two fatally-wounded Vietnam War soldiers, Luc Deveraux (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Dolph Lundgren), who are resurrected and refashioned into superhuman soldiers using a high-tech military experiment.

Opening Scenes
The movie opens with an extreme scene in Vietnam, 1969, where Sergeant Andrew Scott goes rogue, displaying disturbing signs of insanity as he murders fellow soldiers and innocent civilians mercilessly. Luc Deveraux, his pal and good friend, is forced to face him, culminating in a mutual death that seals their fates. They are purportedly stated dead, but in truth, their bodies are kept in cryogenic storage.

The Resurrection
As the movie fast-forwards to the present day, Deveraux and Scott are resuscitated through a secret governmental program, which changes them into 'UniSols,' or Universal Soldiers. These warriors are apparently emotionless, possess exceptional physical prowess, and have no pre-death memories. The UniSols are directed remotely by a group of scientists and military authorities who decide their strategy.

Return of Memories
Nevertheless, as the film advances, Deveraux starts to gain back pieces of his previous memories during a mission, causing a level of emotional and cognitive awakening. Concurrently, the vicious and ruthless tendencies from Scott's past also begin resurfacing. During a chaotic scenario triggered by a reporter called Veronica Roberts (Ally Walker), Deveraux becomes self-aware, and flees from the control of his handlers along with Veronica.

The Confrontation
Deveraux and Veronica form an unlikely alliance in their attempt to avert unrelenting pursuit from the other UniSols. Having a hard time to come to terms with his apparently lost past, Deveraux's memories gradually return, spurring him to renounce his UniSol status and welcome his mankind. Meanwhile, the unhinged Scott becomes increasingly ruthless, his sole goal to eliminate Deveraux.

Climax and Resolution
Towards the climax, Deveraux and Scott face-off for a final time. Echoing their very first fatal fight in Vietnam, Deveraux is challenged by the aggressive and unsurpassable Scott but this time, more prepared and knowledgeable about Scott's unforeseeable nature. In a thrilling face-off, Deveraux lastly accomplishments, killing Scott and protecting his flexibility.

Tradition
Overall, "Universal Soldier" is a riveting film that seamlessly fuses military sci-fi with an exploration of styles such as human identity, memory, and flexibility. The narrative interweaves thrilling fight scenes with the central characters' psychological trajectories, engaging audiences on multiple levels. The movie left a considerable mark on the action category and generated a franchise, including several follows up and television movies.
