John Calvin is describing the teachings of Augustine of Hippo, a 4th century theologian. Augustine thought that humans have the capability to select between great and evil, however that they require the help of grace in order to choose good. Calvin is in contract with Augustine, and believes that humans have the professors of reason and will to select excellent, but that grace is required in order to make the ideal option. Calvin's view is that grace is a gift from God, which it is needed for people to make the right choices. Without grace, human beings are more likely to choose evil.
