This quote by Alexander Pope is an alerting about the power of temptation. He is saying that Satan, the devil, is now more cunning than ever before. Rather of tempting people with poverty and suffering, he is now tempting them with wealth and riches. This is a lot more effective type of temptation, as it is much easier to be swayed by the pledge of wealth and comfort than it is to be tempted by poverty and suffering. Pope is cautioning us to be familiar with this brand-new kind of temptation and to be cautious of it. He is saying that we should not be tricked by the guarantee of wealth and convenience, as it could lead us down a path of destruction. We need to instead focus on our spiritual health and wellbeing and make every effort to live a life of virtue and morality.
