Arthur Schopenhauer thought that the foundation of all ethical behavior and principles is compassion. Compassion, the ability to empathize with others and feel their pain, assists us understand the suffering of others and encourages us to act in manner ins which decrease that suffering. Simply put, Schopenhauer believed that morality can only exist when we are able to put ourselves in the shoes of others and serve as we would want them to act if we were the ones suffering. For that reason, he asserts that compassion is the foundation on which all other ethical worths are constructed.
