Mason Cooley's quote speaks to the paradoxical nature of cynicism. On the one hand, cynicism is a type of hesitation that is rooted in a mistrust of people and institutions. On the various other hand, resentment is usually born out of naive assumptions and dissatisfactions. To put it simply, resentment is a product of optimism that has been rushed by fact. Cynics might be jaded and cynical, yet they are likewise typically optimists that have been let down by the world. Resentment is a form of disillusionment that is born out of a desire for something better. It is a form of dissatisfaction that is rooted in naivete.
