This quote by Robert Louis Stevenson is a reminder that our morals must not make us feel uninspiring. If we discover ourselves feeling down or unhappy since of our morals, it is likely that they are not the right ones for us. Our morals must be uplifting and motivating, not oppressive and restrictive. We need to make every effort to have morals that make us feel empowered and encouraged to do great in the world. Our morals need to be based upon our values and beliefs, and ought to be something that we can be happy with. If our morals make us feel dreary, it is most likely that they are not the best ones for us and we need to put in the time to reevaluate them.
