This quote by Joseph Heller suggests that peace in the world would be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it would be an excellent accomplishment for humanity, as it would mean completion of war and suffering. On the other hand, it would also imply completion of civilization as we know it. This is since civilization is built on competition and dispute, and without it, there would be no development or development. Without competitors, there would be no incentive to innovate or produce, and without conflict, there would be no requirement for diplomacy or settlement. To put it simply, peace on earth would imply completion of the world as we understand it, and the beginning of a new age.
