In this quote, James Madison is highlighting the importance of self-sufficiency and self-reliance. He is describing a particular group of people who have the ability to provide for themselves both in regards to food and clothing. These individuals are not reliant on anybody else for their basic needs, making them really independent. Madison suggests that this self-sufficiency leads to a sense of happiness and satisfaction. By being able to take care of themselves, these citizens are not strained by the expectations or control of others. They are totally free to live their lives by themselves terms, which eventually causes a greater sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.
