"The world gets older, without getting either better or worse and so does literature. But I do think that the drab current phenomenon that passes for literary studies in the university will finally provide its own corrective"

- Harold Bloom

About this Quote

Harold Bloom's quote is reflective of his belief that the world, and literature by extension, is in a constant state of stagnation. This stagnation, nevertheless, does not necessarily suggest a decrease in quality, however rather a lack of development in either direction. Blossom takes issue with the current state of literary research studies in academia, which he thinks has palled and uncreative. However, he believes that the extremely blandness of modern-day literary academic community will eventually force a change, possibly even a return to the more interesting and fulfilling literary research studies of the past. Ultimately, Bloom's message is among expect a better future for literature, despite its current malaise.
