Biography
Marilyn Monroe was an American Golden Globe-winning actress, singer, film producer, model and sex symbol.
After spending most of her childhood in foster homes, she married a 16-year-old James Dougherty. She began working as a model, which led to her first film contract in 1946. Her early roles were minor, but she played among others in the critically acclaimed film Asphalt Jungle and All About Eve (both 1950). The breakthrough came in the movie Niagara in 1953. She was praised for his comedic talent in films like Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953), Married to a Millionaire (1953) and The Seven Year Itch (1955), and was one of the most popular movie stars in Hollywood. A marriage and subsequent divorce from the former baseball player Joe DiMaggio also increased her celebrity status.
Monroe was dissatisfied with constantly having to play the role of "dumb blonde" and started his own production company, Marilyn Monroe Productions, to gain greater control over their own career. She also married the writer and playwright Arthur Miller. Her critically acclaimed performance in Bus Stop (1956) got her nominated for a Golden Globe. She won this award for her performance in Some Like It Hot (1959).
The last years of her life were marked by illness, personal problems and a reputation for being unreliable and difficult to work with. The circumstances of her death from an overdose of sleeping medicine has been characterized by a lack of evidence. The cause of death was set to "probable suicide", but the possibility of a freely overdose has not been ruled out. In addition, a number of conspiracy theories out that she was murdered.
