"I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year"

Daily Insight

Notice he chooses “honor” rather than “celebrate.” Celebrate can be loud, seasonal, even performative, something you do when the calendar tells you to. Honor is steadier and more demanding: it implies loyalty, memory, and a lived standard. That’s why the line lands with such moral force: “I will honor Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year.”

Dickens isn’t selling endless tinsel or permanent cheer. He’s describing an interior conversion, one that outlasts a dinner table truce and survives the bleak Tuesdays of late winter. To keep Christmas “in my heart” is to make warmth a habit instead of a holiday mood, to turn generosity from a burst of December charity into an everyday stance toward other people’s needs.

The phrase “try to keep it” matters, too. It admits friction: the world is busy, unfair, and exhausting. Goodwill leaks. Empathy gets crowded out by deadlines and grievances. Dickens’ pledge doesn’t pretend otherwise; it treats compassion as a practice, repeated, imperfect, and therefore real. The point is not to feel festive forever, but to return, again and again, to a kinder lens: listening more closely, forgiving faster, noticing who’s being left out, and choosing small decencies that accumulate into a more livable community.

Charles Dickens, the great Victorian anatomist of poverty and pride, understood how quickly people become numb to suffering. In novels like Oliver Twist and Great Expectations, he shows that transformation is possible, but only when the heart stops outsourcing its conscience to custom.

With December winding down and the year’s weariness showing at the edges, the practical challenge is simple: carry one concrete part of the season into tomorrow, an apology, a donation, a phone call, a quiet mercy. That’s how humanity becomes a year-long commitment, not a seasonal exception.
