"An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets the more interested he is in her"

Daily Insight

If you’ve ever felt the quiet pressure to “stay young” in order to stay wanted, especially as the calendar turns and January asks us to take inventory, then this line from Agatha Christie is the permission slip you didn’t know you needed: “An archaeologist is the best husband a woman can have. The older she gets the more interested he is in her.”

Christie’s joke lands because it flips a well-worn script. In a culture that often treats aging as subtraction, less novelty, less attention, less value, she reframes time as accumulation. An archaeologist doesn’t chase the untouched surface; he studies layers. He gets excited when there’s more to uncover, when the story has depth, when the object has endured.

That’s the punchline, but also the moral. In real relationships, “interest” can mean a daily practice of curiosity: asking better questions, noticing new details, honoring the life your partner lived before you met them, and the life you’re still building together. Christie is teasing the shallow bargain that equates desirability with freshness, and proposing a sturdier version of love: one where attention grows as history does.

She also gives us a sly toolkit for humor. Laugh at the fear that age makes you less legible, less chosen, less important. Then replace it with a different fantasy: a partner who reads wrinkles like footnotes, who treats experience as evidence, not damage.

Agatha Christie, the world’s most widely read mystery novelist and creator of Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple, wrote from both literary insight and lived experience, she was married to the archaeologist Max Mallowan, and knew how fascination can be a form of devotion.

On an ordinary Tuesday in early January, the application is simple: choose relationships, romantic, professional, even with yourself, that reward depth. The years are coming anyway; Christie reminds us they can arrive as enrichment, not erosion.
