"Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends"

Daily Insight

When the Roman Republic began to fracture, Cicero kept doing the most dangerous thing a public thinker can do: he kept speaking clearly. He rose from outside Rome’s oldest aristocratic families to become one of its greatest orators, surviving exile, political whiplash, and the collapse of the world he had devoted his life to. That is what gives force to his observation: “Every man can tell how many goats or sheep he possesses, but not how many friends”. This was not a clever line tossed off from comfort. It was a lesson earned under pressure.

Most people can measure what they own, track what they earn, and list who is in their network. But friendship does not live in a spreadsheet. It reveals itself in harder currencies: honesty, loyalty, sacrifice, and the willingness to stay present when convenience disappears. That matters in daily life because we often confuse access with affection. A full inbox, a crowded table, or a long contact list can feel like proof of connection, but quantity is not the same as trust.

Cicero understood that social life easily becomes transactional. People praise you when you are useful, agree with you when it is safe, and disappear when it becomes costly to remain. The practical question, then, is not “How many people know me?” but “Who tells me the truth? Who would help carry the burden?” That question improves leadership, steadies resilience, and protects you from building your life on applause instead of character.

Cicero was a Roman statesman, master orator, and philosophical writer whose words helped define civic thought for centuries. Having navigated power, exile, and upheaval, he knew the difference between political alliance and genuine human bond.

So today, do one small thing that cannot be mistaken for performance: send a thoughtful message to one person who has stood by you, and thank them specifically for the cost they were willing to bear. Count your blessings less like property and more like people, and may that change the way you walk through the day.
