"It was indeed not very sound. However, those who had taken it, were in a fairer way of recovery than the others at the end of the fortnight, which was the length of time all these different courses were continued, except the oranges"

- James Lind

About this Quote

This quote is from James Lind's 1753 book, A Treatise of the Scurvy. In this quote, Lind is discussing the outcomes of his experiment to discover a cure for scurvy. He had tested six various treatments on twelve sailors struggling with scurvy. Among the treatments was oranges and lemons, which he discovered to be the most effective. Nevertheless, he notes that even the sailors who had actually taken the less efficient treatments remained in a better condition than the sailors who had not taken any treatment at all after two weeks. This recommends that even treatments that are not really sound can still be useful sometimes. Lind's experiment was groundbreaking and led to the discovery of the value of Vitamin C in avoiding scurvy. His findings revolutionized the method sailors and other people at sea had the ability to stay healthy.
