He was minority leader in the U.S. Senate from 1959 to 1969. He played a key role behind the 1964 Civil Rights Act, the Act on civil rights.Dirksen dropped out of University of Minnesota College of Law to participate in the First World War. He later studied law at the new 1936 and completed his law degree. Dirksen was a member of U.S. House of Representatives 1933-1949 and Senator from Illinois 1951-1969. He defeated Senate Majority Leader Scott W. Lucas of the 1950 Congressional elections and was reelected to the Senate 1956, 1962 and 1968. Dirksen was the Republican whip 1957-1959 and then succeeded William F. Knowland as Republican leader in the Senate. Dirksen was early in his career, an isolationist and supporter of Robert Taft. He changed his foreign policy positions over the years and supported Dwight D. Eisenhower and John F. Kennedy's internationalism. Dirksen was a supporter of the Vietnam War and supported the Lyndon B. Johnson as president escalated the war, something that Dirksen had earlier demanded. Dirk's daughter Joy married Howard Baker, who later became majority leader in the Senate. Dirk's tomb is in the hometown of Pekin. One of the Senate buildings were named Dirksen Senate Office Building in 1972.
