Movie Summary
"Lost River" is a 2015 American dream film composed, produced, and directed by Ryan Gosling in his directorial launching, featuring stars such as Christina Hendricks, Iain De Caestecker, Matt Smith, Saoirse Ronan, and Eva Mendes. This indie film premiered at Cannes Festival in 2014 and was consulted with a lukewarm reaction, leaving the audience divided, though some critics noted its atmospheric mood, visuals, and a soundtrack which adds to a surreal experience.

Plot Summary
Set against the falling apart city of Lost River, the movie revolves around a character-driven narrative of a struggling single mother, Billy (Christina Hendricks), and her 2 children, Bones (Iain De Caestecker) and Frankie. Billy handles impending eviction from her household house, while Bones comes to grips with a vicious local bully, Bully (Matt Smith), who has declared rights over their rotting city.

Billy uses up a task at an eerie burlesque club in a desperate bid to save her house, run by Dave (Ben Mendelsohn), who suggests the cabaret task to her. This mysterious underworld club humorously yet grotesquely reenacts murder scenes for a thrill-seeking audience, including a noticeable layer of fear to the proceedings.

On the other hand, Bones establishes a fragile romance with strong next-door neighbor Rat (Saoirse Ronan) who lives in her own dilapidated house with her mute grandmother. Rat assists Bones on his mission to collect scrap metal around the town, leading to a series of encounters with Bully, which intensifies the currently tense scenario.

Design and Criticism
"Lost River" is heavily affected by Gosling's experiences working with some cinematic auteurs particularly, Nicolas Winding Refn, with whom the actor dealt with "Drive" and "Only God Forgives". The film evokes a surreal blend of neo-noir, dream and some scary aspects. Its background, the impoverished and desolate city of Lost River, is recorded in chillingly climatic detail. However, despite the good cinematography by BenoƮt Debie and a haunting score, the movie's story has been criticised for doing not have coherence and depth, with some reviewers identifying it as self-indulgent.

Conclusion
"Lost River" closes with a climactic face-off between Bones and Bully that ends in the death of the brutal antagonist. As Bones, Rat, and his family evacuate the ruined city, they leave with knowing smiles, recommending a future filled with hope and prospective regardless of their grim past and present; epitomizing the hidden theme of determination.

Despite mixed reviews, "Lost River" gives an undeniable insight into Ryan Gosling's directorial design, showcasing a concrete fondness for visual storytelling, significance, and a darkly poetic sense of environment. Although the motion picture's story may leave many viewers struggling to connect the dots, its striking aesthetic and committed efficiencies make it an interesting watch.
