Romeo + Juliet (1996)

Romeo + Juliet Poster

In director Baz Luhrmann's contemporary take on William Shakespeare's classic tragedy, the Montagues and Capulets have moved their ongoing feud to the sweltering suburb of Verona Beach, where Romeo and Juliet fall in love and secretly wed. Though the film is visually modern, the bard's dialogue remains.

Overview
"Romeo + Juliet", released in 1996, is a modernized adjustment of William Shakespeare's terrible romantic play, "Romeo and Juliet". Directed by Baz Luhrmann, this film includes stars such as Leonardo DiCaprio as Romeo and Claire Danes as Juliet. Although the plot and dialogue remain true to the initial work, the setting and visual design are contemporarily reimagined. The fight between the Capulets and Montagues ends up being a gang rivalry in a fictionalized modern-day city called Verona Beach, set versus a background of drugs, guns, and religion.

Plot
The film starts with the original prologue spoken by a news anchor, developing the continuous fight between the Montague and Capulet households. Romeo, a Montague, is presented as a melancholic youth preoccupied by a damaged love affair. After participating in a masquerade ball held by the Capulets in disguise, he meets and immediately falls for Juliet, uninformed that she is a Capulet.

Their romance rapidly intensifies when they secretly marry after an impassioned terrace exchange, helped by Friar Laurence, in hopes that their union might end their families' feud. However, their hopes for peace are shattered when Tybalt, Juliet's cousin, initiates a fight with Mercutio, Romeo's friend, resulting in multiple deaths and Romeo's banishment from Verona.

As Juliet finds herself betrothed to Paris, a county gentleman picked by her parents, Friar Laurence develops a plan to reunite the lovers. Juliet fabricates her own death, but the message stops working to reach Romeo in time, resulting in the tragic end of both young fans.

Styling and Reception
Luhrmann recontextualizes Shakespeare's poetic dialogue and theatrical expressions within the modern, vibrant, and chaotic world of Verona Beach. The motion picture's visual design is defined by its dynamic sets, flamboyant costumes, and cinematic metaphors magnifying the story's passion, violence, and tragedy.

The film referrals popular culture, spiritual imagery, and echoes themes of fate and destiny through various signs such as water and the continuous presence of a looming statue of Christ the Redeemer. Emphasizing the passion and misery of young, forbidden love, the use of a diverse mix of pop, rock, and symphonic music sets the stage for the troubled and emotional journey.

The film garnered combined evaluations upon its release. While some praised Luhrmann's boldness in reimagining such a timeless play and the efficiencies of DiCaprio and Danes, others slammed the hyper-stylized adaptation for losing some of the play's emotional depth. Nevertheless, the film's unique design and contemporary interpretation introduced Shakespeare's work to a brand-new generation and elevated Luhrmann's status as a visionary director. "Romeo + Juliet" stays an iconic film that lingers long in memory due to its unique mix of timeless text and modern visuals.
