To support his music and gain a slice of 'the good life', he relies on an unlawful get-rich-quick plan.

Lewan persuades his fans to invest in his self-styled "Polka Empire". He offers promissory notes, ensuring a 12% profit, attracting a big quantity of financial investment, making it an incredibly successful Ponzi scheme. As Lewan starts making returns on his supposed financial investments and endeavors, he starts living a lavish lifestyle and even handles to fulfill the Pope, an event he takes advantage of to increase his image.

Character Development and Film Climax
Regardless of Lewan's growing wealth, his life begins to spiral out of control. His devoted spouse, Marla (played by Jenny Slate), once supportive of her hubby, grows disillusioned as she starts to see the stress and illegalities behind their new life. His loyal pal and band member Mickey (played by Jason Schwartzman), is also deeply impacted by the fallout from the prohibited activities. Furthermore, the high-visibility of Lewan's music efficiencies inadvertently draws in the attention of the authorities.
