Life & Wisdom Quote by Ezra Pound

"A civilized man is one who will give a serious answer to a serious question. Civilization itself is a certain sane balance of values"

About this Quote

Pound makes “civilization” sound less like a museum label and more like a behavioral test: can you meet seriousness with seriousness, without collapsing into slogan, tantrum, or performance? The first sentence is deceptively plain. It defines the civilized not by taste or status but by a discipline of attention. A “serious answer” implies patience, proportion, and the willingness to risk being wrong in public - the opposite of the cheap cleverness that turns hard questions into social theater. Pound, a poet obsessed with precision, treats language as a moral instrument: if your response is sloppy, civilization is already fraying.

The second sentence tightens the screw. “A certain sane balance of values” is an anti-utopian formulation. Pound isn’t offering progress or purity; he’s arguing for calibration. The word “certain” admits contingency: balance will look different across times and places. “Sane” signals a refusal of extremes - ideological, aesthetic, emotional. Subtext: civilization isn’t inherited; it’s maintained, constantly, through judgment. You can hear the modernist anxiety underneath: in an age of mass politics and mass media, seriousness is hard to sustain, and without it values get flattened into noise.

Context complicates the aphorism. Pound’s lifelong campaign for cultural rigor sits beside his catastrophic political choices and propaganda work. That tension gives the line its bite and its warning: the posture of seriousness can be genuine civic virtue, or it can become a mask for certainty. His definition of civilization is persuasive precisely because it’s so modest - and unsettling because we know how easily “seriousness” can be commandeered.
