Life & Wisdom Quote by Homer

"A decent boldness ever meets with friends"

About this Quote

“Decent boldness” is doing a lot of diplomatic work here. Homer praises courage, but not the hotheaded, glory-drunk kind that gets men killed for a lyric in someone else’s song. The adjective is the guardrail: boldness that stays within the boundaries of honor, hospitality, and reputation - the social operating system of the Homeric world. In the Iliad and the Odyssey, you don’t survive on grit alone; you survive on recognition. You’re known, you’re hosted, you’re spared, you’re believed because other people can read your posture and decide you’re worth aligning with.

The line also hints at how “friends” are made in epic society: not through confession or compatibility, but through public proof. A warrior earns comrades by stepping forward when it counts; a stranger earns protection by speaking up with the right mix of nerve and restraint. Boldness becomes a signal of competence, and competence is what makes alliances rational. Even the gods, moody as they are, tend to back the figure who acts decisively and in character. Hesitation looks like weakness; weakness invites predation.

There’s an almost modern insight underneath the archaic morals: confidence is contagious, but only when it’s legible as principled rather than reckless. “Decent” boldness is the kind that reassures bystanders you won’t embarrass them, endanger them, or force them to clean up your mess. Homer’s epics are crowded with speeches because community is built in public, and this line is a compact rule for that stage: act bravely, yes - but in a way that others can safely stand next to.
