The line riffs on the old theatrical chestnut "A funny thing happened on the way to the forum", which matters because it frames campaigning as performance and the candidate as the reluctant leading man. Stevenson, the intellectual Democrat with a taste for irony, knew he was running against the new TV-age charisma of Eisenhower. Humor lets him admit the mismatch without pleading. He turns potential humiliation into a story he controls: if the trip ends badly, it was always, at least partly, a comedy.

The subtext is a kind of patrician realism. Stevenson often played the role of the thinking man's politician in a culture increasingly suspicious of thinkers.
