"A great civilization is not conquered from without until it has destroyed itself from within"
About this Quote
The intent is less prophecy than diagnosis. Durant spent a lifetime distilling long arcs of history into patterns ordinary readers could recognize. Here she offers a grim rule of thumb: when a society is cohesive, confident, and reasonably just, outsiders can bloody it but rarely finish it. When it corrodes internally - through inequality that hardens into caste, institutions hollowed by corruption, civic trust replaced by factional paranoia - invasion becomes paperwork.
The subtext is a rebuke to political storytelling. Leaders love blaming “outside agitators,” foreign plots, enemy ideologies, because it absolves the home front. Durant insists the opposite: external threats succeed when internal legitimacy fails. “Great civilization” is bait, too. It flatters the reader’s inheritance, then immediately suggests greatness is brittle, maintained only by continual self-restraint.
Context matters: writing in the shadow of two world wars and watching empires scramble, Durant had seen how decadence, exhaustion, and moral confusion make nations eager for strongmen or resigned to decline. The sentence works because it shifts fear inward, where responsibility lives - and where denial is most expensive.
