Daily Inspiration Quote by Toni Morrison

"A lot of black people believe that Jews in this country have become white. They behave like white people rather than Jewish people"

About this Quote

Morrison drops a live wire into America’s favorite polite fiction: that racial categories are stable, and that minority status is an automatic, permanent bond. Her line isn’t a demographic claim so much as a diagnosis of how power works. “Become white” is shorthand for accession to the privileges, protections, and reflexes of the dominant group: safety in institutions, credibility by default, proximity to decision-makers, the ability to treat racism as someone else’s emergency. In that reading, “white” isn’t an ethnicity; it’s a social contract.

The phrasing “behave like white people rather than Jewish people” is deliberately provocative because it treats “Jewish” less as a religion than as a historical posture: a memory of exclusion that should, theoretically, generate solidarity with other outsiders. Morrison is calling out the temptation to trade that memory for assimilation, to accept a seat at the table on the condition that you stop flipping it over. The subtext is about selective empathy: how quickly a group that once read as suspect can be reclassified as “safe,” and how that reclassification can harden into gatekeeping against those still marked as Black.

Context matters: postwar American Jews increasingly gained access to housing, education, and professional networks that were structurally denied to Black Americans, even as antisemitism persisted. Morrison is capturing a specific Black perception of that uneven climb, and the resentment it can generate, without flattening the moral complexity. It’s a sentence designed to make everyone uncomfortable, because discomfort is where her politics lives: in the gap between shared oppression and unequal escape routes.
