"A man can do what he wants, but not want what he wants"
About this Quote
The line works because it weaponizes a common moral intuition. We routinely judge people as if desire itself were a choice: Why do you crave that? Why can’t you just want better things? Schopenhauer’s subtext is an indictment of that smugness. If your desires are stitched together by temperament, biology, upbringing, and circumstance, then “self-control” is less sovereign command than tactical management of forces you didn’t pick. Responsibility doesn’t vanish, but it gets reframed: you’re accountable for what you do with your desires, not for their existence.
Context matters. Schopenhauer writes in the shadow of Kant’s divide between the world as it appears and the world as it is, and against the optimistic, progress-drunk rationalism of his era. He replaces the Enlightenment’s confident “reason” with “the will”: a blind, incessant striving that uses intellect as its press secretary. The quote’s austerity is the point. It’s a philosophical one-liner that feels like a verdict, and it anticipates modern discomforting insights from Freud to neuroscience: the conscious self may be a narrator, not the author.
