This quote by Lewis Mumford talks to the concept that nerve is an effective tool in and of itself. A guy of guts does not need weapons to secure himself, as his guts is enough to protect him. Nevertheless, this does not mean that a man of guts is unsusceptible to the effects of his actions. He might still require bail if he finds himself in a situation where he needs to address for his actions. This quote is a tip that guts is a powerful tool, however it is not a guard from the repercussions of one's actions. Nerve is a virtue, however it is not a license to do whatever one pleases without repercussion.
