Life & Wisdom Quote by William S. Burroughs

"A paranoid is someone who knows a little of what's going on"

About this Quote

Paranoia, in Burroughs's hands, isn’t a malfunction so much as a grim upgrade to ordinary perception. The line lands because it flips the clinical insult: the paranoid isn’t irrational, he’s just caught holding a partial receipt for reality. “Knows a little” is the knife twist. Not “knows the truth,” not “sees through it all,” but has enough scattered evidence to feel the machinery moving behind the wallpaper. That sliver of knowledge is exactly what makes the mind start connecting dots into a constellation that may or may not exist.

Burroughs wrote out of a mid-century pressure cooker where “what’s going on” was both obvious and unspeakable: Cold War surveillance, covert state power, narcotics policing, social control dressed up as public health. His work treats modern life as a system that runs on hidden incentives and managed narratives; the paranoid is simply the person whose denial has sprung a leak. The joke is that society calls him sick because acknowledging the system would require everyone else to admit complicity.

The subtext is also self-mocking: paranoia feeds on incomplete information, and incomplete information is the standard condition of citizens. Burroughs suggests that what we label mental illness can be a sane reaction to living in an environment engineered to be unreadable. The line survives because it anticipates today’s ambient suspicion - algorithms, data collection, disinformation - where “a little” knowledge is enough to make you feel hunted, even when you can’t name the hunter.
