Then the landscape steps in: “dense brush.” Nature is recruited as an accomplice of threat - concealment, infiltration, the old military fear of unseen movement. It’s a battlefield vocabulary smuggled into civilian governance.

The historical attribution is jarring: Murphy’s lifetime predates cameras by a century, which suggests either misattribution or deliberate anachronism. Either way, it underlines the point: the impulse to militarize migration is older than the technology. Tools change; the posture doesn’t.
