"Acting allows me to tell a lot of stories, you know start at the beginning, finish at the end, and tell everything in between. Modelling is just an image"
About this Quote
The subtext is a rebuttal to being treated like a face first and a person second. In the 1990s and early 2000s, Diaz was marketed relentlessly through image: beachy blond, effortless cool, a camera-ready type. By insisting on "everything in between", she’s claiming interiority, the messy connective tissue that an image can’t easily hold: doubt, motivation, contradiction, the slow shift from one self to another.
There’s also a strategic self-positioning here. Acting is labor, craft, duration; modeling is product. One is framed as authorship, the other as objecthood. Even the grammar tells on the hierarchy: acting "allows me" (agency), while modeling "is just" (diminishment). She’s not insulting models so much as refusing the cultural shorthand that collapses women in public into a single picture. Diaz’s intent is to expand the frame - not only of a career, but of how we’re permitted to be seen.
