Aging & Wisdom Quote by Terry Gilliam

"Actually, I began to think that maybe there is a god, after all. Or maybe it's a different one. The old one got fired"

About this Quote

Gilliam’s God doesn’t die in a blaze of Nietzschean philosophy; he gets laid off. That’s the joke, and it’s also the thesis of his entire career: the sacred is just another failing institution, and our “meaning” is managed by invisible bureaucracies that can be as petty as they are powerful. By framing belief as a workplace restructuring - the old deity “fired,” a new one maybe hired - he turns theology into human systems: HR, branding, replacement parts. The punchline lands because it treats an enormous metaphysical question with the casual cruelty of office gossip, exposing how modern life already trains us to think this way.

The subtext is classic Gilliam: distrust of inherited authority, whether it’s church, state, or the story you were told you’re living inside. A “different” god implies not atheism but volatility - faith as a rotating cast rather than a fixed anchor. It also smuggles in a complaint about storytelling itself: the old narrative no longer convinces, so we workshop a reboot.

Context matters because Gilliam is the director who made Brazil’s totalitarian paperwork feel like slapstick and made religious certainty in Monty Python’s orbit look both hilarious and dangerous. His worlds run on malfunctioning machinery, and belief is part of that machinery: comfortingly omnipotent until the gears strip. Calling God “fired” isn’t just irreverence; it’s an X-ray of a culture where authority has become procedural, and even the divine has to answer to performance reviews.
