"Actually, I'm not that involved in the fan site"
About this Quote
Coming from David Prowse, the original physical performer inside Darth Vader’s suit, the line lands with extra bite. Prowse spent decades in the strange limbo of being essential to an icon while also being kept at arm’s length from the franchise machine (famously, his voice wasn’t used; his relationship with Lucasfilm was fraught). Against that backdrop, the idea that he’d be deeply plugged into an online fan operation sounds like the kind of fantasy audiences project onto any “legacy” figure: that the person behind the mask must also be the curator of the shrine.
The subtext is boundary-setting disguised as modesty. He isn’t attacking fans; he’s deflating the parasocial assumption that access equals obligation. The phrase “fan site” evokes a whole ecosystem where devotion becomes unpaid labor and celebrity becomes community property. Prowse’s understatement reasserts authorship over his own time and persona: appreciation is welcome, but it doesn’t entitle anyone to managerial proximity.
It’s also a quietly savvy move. By not overexplaining, he avoids sounding resentful or ungrateful. He lets the reality stand: the myth can live online without him staffing it. For someone whose most famous performance was literally being hidden, it’s a fitting kind of visibility - present, but not possessed.

Evidence:
Actually I’m not that involved in the fan site.. The quote appears in a Q&A interview with David Prowse originally posted on Lightsabre.co.uk on July 20, 2000. The surviving republication on Fantha Tracks explicitly states, “This interview was originally posted on lightsabre.co.uk on 20th July 2000.” In context, the interviewer asks: “You’re involved with your own fan site on the internet, answering questions and requests at speed. What is the attraction of the internet for you?” Prowse replies: “Actually I’m not that involved in the fan site. My road manager in America and fan club president Max Patterson arranged the whole thing and Louis Tambone does an excellent job of maintaining the site. All credit should be given to them.” I found no reliable evidence that the quote originated in a movie, TV script, speech, or book earlier than this interview. The widespread shortened form with a comma after “Actually” is a later quotation-site normalization; the preserved interview text uses no comma. |
