Life & Wisdom Quote by Rainer Maria Rilke

"All emotions are pure which gather you and lift you up; that emotion is impure which seizes only one side of your being and so distorts you"

About this Quote

Rilke draws a hard line that sounds moral but is really diagnostic: the test of a feeling is not whether it is pleasant, but whether it makes you more whole. "Pure" emotions, for him, are integrative forces. They gather the scattered parts of the self - body, mind, memory, desire, conscience - and pull them into a single direction of aliveness. The verb choice matters: "gather" suggests a self that is normally dispersed, living in fragments, and "lift you up" implies elevation without denial, like an internal re-stacking of priorities.

Then he flips it. The "impure" emotion isn't sinful; it's partial. It "seizes" one side of you, a word with predatory teeth, and turns that slice into the whole story. That is how distortion happens: not through feeling too much, but through feeling too narrowly. Jealousy, resentment, infatuation, even righteous anger can be intensely clarifying in the moment - and still be corrupting because they amputate the rest of your perception. Rilke is warning against emotions that masquerade as total truth while quietly shrinking the self to a single obsession.

Context sharpens the intent. Writing from the early modernist crisis of selfhood - when old religious and social certainties were breaking, and psychology was reframing the inner life - Rilke treats emotion as a spiritual instrument. He isn't preaching repression; he's arguing for expansion. The subtext is a creative ethic: the artist (and the adult) should trust feelings that deepen complexity, and be suspicious of the ones that simplify you into a caricature.
