"All is mine but nothing owned, nothing owned for memory, and mine only while I look"
About this Quote
The sharpest turn is "nothing owned for memory". Memory, usually treated as our private archive, is exposed as unreliable custody. You can't lock a moment in a vault; you can only replay a version that changes each time you handle it. Szymborska's subtext is almost ethical: if even memory isn't secure possession, then the human urge to claim, to hoard, to define permanence is a kind of self-deception. The poem doesn't moralize; it simply removes the furniture from the room and asks you to stand.
"And mine only while I look" pins the whole insight to the act of attention. Seeing becomes a temporary contract: the gaze grants intimacy, not ownership, and it expires instantly. That has the cool sting of impermanence, but also a liberating humility. In the context of Szymborska's broader work - skeptical, tender, allergic to grand abstractions after a century addicted to them - the line reads as a small resistance to ideological possession. If nothing can be owned, not even the past, then certainty itself is suspect. What remains is the momentary, vivid democracy of looking: the world belongs to you exactly as long as you are awake to it.
