She’s insisting that influences leak across borders - sex into religion, commerce into aesthetics, antiquity into MTV - and that the critic’s job is to hear those contaminations rather than sanitizing them.

Context matters. Paglia emerged as a high-voltage contrarian in late-20th-century culture wars, skeptical of theory that flattens art into ideology alone.
