Philosophical systems competed like brands; reputations were gatekept by universities, salons, and journals. In that ecosystem, “truth” doesn’t simply win by being true. It has to survive the social immune system that treats novelty as infection.

The line’s brilliance is its portability - science, politics, art, tech - but that’s also its trap. Falsehoods also travel through ridicule and backlash, then harden into “common sense.” Schopenhauer gives dissenters a compelling narrative; he doesn’t give them a test.
