Creativity Quote by Hugh Hopper

"Always think that in any area of the arts, you get maybe ten percent of people who are creative, original... and the rest are generally following on, copying"

About this Quote

Creativity, Hugh Hopper implies, is a minority sport - and the provocation is that it stays that way even in scenes that pride themselves on rebellion. By putting a number on it ("maybe ten percent"), he’s not doing sociology; he’s doing discipline. The ratio is a musician’s cold shower, a way of separating the romance of art from the daily reality of how styles spread: one person breaks ground, nine people build condos on it.

The intent isn’t contempt for "the rest" so much as a warning about comfort. Copying, in Hopper’s framing, is the default setting of culture: it’s safer, legible to audiences, easier to market, and rewarded by institutions that need recognizable product more than strange new languages. Originality, by contrast, is expensive. It costs you gigs, radio play, and sometimes your place in the room. Saying the quiet part out loud is Hopper’s way of giving permission to resist the gravitational pull of trend.

Context matters: Hopper came out of the late-60s/70s British progressive and jazz-rock ecosystem (notably Soft Machine adjacent), a world where innovation was the brand but also a treadmill. Even "experimental" scenes quickly develop templates - the approved kinds of odd time signatures, the sanctioned noises, the fashionable dissonance. His subtext is: don’t confuse complexity with originality, and don’t mistake being part of an avant-garde for actually pushing it forward.

The line lands because it punctures ego. Most artists want to be the ten percent; Hopper suggests the real work is noticing when you’re not.
