Placed in the late Roman Republic’s atmosphere of faction, patron-client bonds, and political whiplash, the warning feels less like abstract moralizing than street-level realism. Alliances were how careers were made - and how lives were ruined. The poet’s cynicism is practical: power attracts enemies, demands performances of loyalty, and punishes ambiguity. Even benevolent patrons create dependence that can curdle into coercion.

The subtext is bleakly modern. Aligning with “the strong” often looks like strategy; Phaedrus reframes it as exposure. Your name becomes a footnote in someone else’s story, and footnotes are easy to erase.
