"And new Philosophy calls all in doubt, the element of fire is quite put out; the Sun is lost, and the earth, and no mans wit can well direct him where to look for it"
About this Quote
The genius is how he renders epistemology as panic. “Calls all in doubt” turns skepticism into a public summons, almost legalistic, as if knowledge itself has been subpoenaed. Then he stacks blunt negations: fire “put out,” the Sun “lost,” the earth “lost.” These aren’t literal claims about astronomy so much as emotional weather reports: the elements, the celestial anchor, the ground beneath you all suddenly feel negotiable. He picks “fire” because it’s the most vivid of the classical elements, the one that should be self-evident; if even that can be revised, nothing is safe.
“No mans wit” is the darkest turn. The Renaissance faith in human reason is there, but only as a measure of its failure. Donne’s subtext is cultural vertigo: when the map of reality redraws itself, the problem isn’t just where the planets go, it’s where meaning goes. The line mourns certainty while admitting, reluctantly, that the old certainty was already crumbling.
