He picks “fire” because it’s the most vivid of the classical elements, the one that should be self-evident; if even that can be revised, nothing is safe.

“No mans wit” is the darkest turn. The Renaissance faith in human reason is there, but only as a measure of its failure. Donne’s subtext is cultural vertigo: when the map of reality redraws itself, the problem isn’t just where the planets go, it’s where meaning goes. The line mourns certainty while admitting, reluctantly, that the old certainty was already crumbling.
