Politics & Power Quote by Matt Stone

"And there's a visceral fun in watching Team America and making it, like taking a puppet and throwing it against the wall. Because it's not CG, there's something funny about it"

About this Quote

Stone is describing a very particular kind of pleasure: comedy that comes from material resistance. Team America is filthy, violent, absurd, but the key is that it looks like work. A puppet has weight, seams, strings, a stubborn physicality you can feel even through the screen. When he talks about “taking a puppet and throwing it against the wall,” he’s confessing the giddy, slightly delinquent thrill of abusing something that’s obviously been built by human hands. It’s slapstick plus sabotage.

The jab at CG isn’t just an aesthetic preference; it’s a cultural critique. Computer imagery can make anything happen, which also means nothing has to matter. In a CG world, destruction is frictionless and therefore emotionally cheap. A puppet, by contrast, carries a weird kind of innocence. It’s halfway between toy and actor. Watching it get wrecked triggers a double response: you laugh at the cartoonish violence, and you laugh again because part of you is thinking, “They actually did that.” The joke rides on the tension between artifice and reality, not their separation.

Context matters: Team America lands in the early-2000s moment when big-budget spectacle was getting smoother, shinier, more “real,” and political rhetoric was aggressively performative. Stone and Parker answer with a medium that can’t pretend to be natural. The stiff faces and jerky motion force you to see the strings - which becomes its own punchline about propaganda, masculinity, and Hollywood heroism: all swagger, all constructed, all easily slammed into a wall.
