In that context, “freedom and excitement” aren’t moral verdicts; they’re affective consequences. The forbidden gets to feel alive because it hasn’t been assigned chores.

Subtext: the thrill is often less about the person you’re tempted by and more about the temporary self you become when you step outside the role. Outside marriage, you can be reckless, unaccountable, singular. Inside it, you’re legible. Winterson is prodding at how “legible” can start to feel like “contained,” especially for women and queer people whose desires have historically been policed by “respectability.”

There’s also a trap embedded in the phrasing: “seems like.” The excitement may be a mirage produced by constraint, not proof of a better life. Winterson’s real target is the fantasy of escape itself, and the way we outsource our hunger for reinvention to romantic transgression instead of asking what, exactly, marriage has been asked to domesticate.
