That’s not romance; it’s workflow.

The intent is almost comic: Levinson sketches a studio logic where risk is managed by misunderstanding. People didn’t assess the film on its own terms, they slotted it into a preexisting mental folder: “high school comedy,” “silly,” “like Mel Brooks.” The Mel Brooks reference is doing real work here. It signals how reputations become shorthand, and how shorthand becomes permission. If you’ve been around comedy, executives assume you’ll deliver a certain kind of harmlessness, a genre with soft expectations and low stakes. That misread becomes the project’s camouflage.

There’s also a sly defense embedded in the shrugging tone: if the film later lands as sharper, stranger, or more resonant than anticipated, it wasn’t because the gatekeepers were visionary. It was because their inattentiveness created space. Levinson isn’t mythologizing auteur genius; he’s pointing to the banal administrative cracks where culture sometimes sneaks in and gets made anyway.
