Conversely, you can be an artist before you’ve made anything “important,” because the defining trait is a certain kind of attention and compulsion. In Schlegel’s late-18th/early-19th century context - with Romantic writers pushing back against Enlightenment rationalism and neoclassical standards - the quote argues for authorship as a mode of being, not a credential. It’s less comfort than provocation: if the artist is made by sensibility, then the real work is cultivating that sensibility, not merely producing objects that look like art.
