"Art and works of art do not make an artist; sense and enthusiasm and instinct do"
About this Quote
The triad matters. “Sense” signals disciplined perception, a mind trained to notice structure and meaning rather than merely feel. “Enthusiasm” is the combustible charge Romanticism prized: the heat that breaks decorum and turns observation into urgency. “Instinct” is the clincher, smuggling in something pre-rational and bodily, a refusal to let aesthetic legitimacy be policed by rules alone. Schlegel isn’t dismissing craft so much as demoting it; technique can be copied, even mass-produced, but the inward orientation that generates art can’t be faked for long.
Subtextually, he’s also warning against a shallow résumé view of creativity. You can accumulate artifacts and still be spiritually dead, a curator of your own output. Conversely, you can be an artist before you’ve made anything “important,” because the defining trait is a certain kind of attention and compulsion. In Schlegel’s late-18th/early-19th century context - with Romantic writers pushing back against Enlightenment rationalism and neoclassical standards - the quote argues for authorship as a mode of being, not a credential. It’s less comfort than provocation: if the artist is made by sensibility, then the real work is cultivating that sensibility, not merely producing objects that look like art.
