It also flatters the artist with responsibility. If your work descends from God through nature, then craft becomes a spiritual discipline: attention, humility, accuracy. The line anticipates later arguments about mimesis, but Dante’s version is less about realism for its own sake than about participation in order. It’s a medieval answer to a modern anxiety: if art doesn’t answer to anything beyond the self, what keeps it from becoming mere performance or power? Dante’s solution is blunt and bracing: art can be free, but it’s never unmoored.
