Sensibility is the selective, responsive intelligence that shapes those structures — the artist's trained eye and ear, their temperament, moral feeling, and alertness to the lived world. Neither is sufficient alone. Pattern without sensibility is sterile design; sensibility without pattern dissolves into formless impulse. Read wrote as a champion of modernism who refused the false choice between cold formalism and unbridled emotion. Influenced by Gestalt psychology, he held that humans perceive wholes, not piles of details. He also argued for an organic conception of form, defending sculptors like Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, whose work draws on natural growth and tension rather than mechanical symmetry. Pattern, in this sense, is not a grid imposed from outside but an order that breathes, analogous to veins in a leaf or the phrasing in a line of poetry. Sensibility informs which patterns are chosen, stretched, or broken to register a particular mood or idea.

The line also points to the viewer's role. Aesthetic experience is the recognition of patterned order quickened by our own sensibility; education in the arts, which Read advocated, is fundamentally the cultivation of that responsiveness. Consider a Bach fugue: its strict counterpoint is nothing without the shaping of dynamics and tone; or a Mondrian grid, where tiny decisions of color and spacing radiate a precise calm; or a handmade bowl whose irregular rim makes the circle feel alive. In each case, pattern carries feeling because sensibility has given it purpose. Read's formula names art as living order, humanized by attention.
