"As a remedy to life in society I would suggest the big city. Nowadays, it is the only desert within our means"
About this Quote
“Within our means” is the dagger. The old desert remedy (escape, retreat, transcendence) is expensive in money, time, and myth. Modernity has priced out true withdrawal. What’s left is a democratized exile: the subway, the rented room, the café where nobody asks your name. Camus is also quietly diagnosing the 20th century’s mass society - the flattening of individuality into slogans, party lines, respectable identities. The city offers a counter-move: you can reject the demand to belong without having to become a hermit.
The subtext is classic Camus: the desire for lucidity without consolation. The metropolis doesn’t solve absurdity; it stages it. You walk among millions and still meet the blank fact of aloneness. That’s the cure he’s proposing - not happiness, but a livable distance from the social machine, achieved through the strange, modern miracle of being left alone together.
