Passion implies devotion, not just technique; spontaneity implies a kind of courage. You can practice all you want, but at some point you still have to step onstage and make a decision you can’t take back.

The quote is also quietly polemical. It pushes against the museumification of jazz: repertory orchestras, polite tributes, and the industry’s tendency to treat innovation as a closed chapter called “the classics.” Haden insists the art form doesn’t flourish by being preserved correctly; it flourishes by being endangered a little, every night. “Creating something that’s never been before” isn’t naïve boosterism, either. In jazz, “new” often means new relations - between players, between harmony and time, between what the audience expects and what the band dares.

Context sharpens the intent. Haden came up in the post-bop and free-jazz era, playing with Ornette Coleman and others who were punished, aesthetically and socially, for refusing to sound “proper.” His line reads like a defense of that tradition: jazz’s future belongs to the improviser, not the archivist.
