Daily Inspiration Quote by Bodhidharma

"As long as you look for a Buddha somewhere else, you'll never see that your own mind is the Buddha"

About this Quote

Bodhidharma’s line is a trapdoor: it drops the listener out of spiritual consumerism and into an uncomfortable intimacy with their own attention. The “somewhere else” isn’t just geography; it’s the whole reflex to outsource authority-to hunt for saints, systems, relics, retreats, or a perfected future self. In that chase, the seeker stays safely at a distance from the only place awakening could actually occur: the mind doing the seeking.

The brilliance is the reversal of status. “Buddha” is typically imagined as an exalted figure you approach by merit or proximity. Bodhidharma collapses that hierarchy and makes the sacred immanent. Not “your mind can become Buddha,” which would preserve the ladder and the timeline, but “your own mind is the Buddha,” a grammatical mugging of spiritual ambition. The intent isn’t self-flattery; it’s to cut off dependence. If enlightenment is elsewhere, you need intermediaries. If it’s mind, the entire economy of spiritual gatekeeping starts to look like noise.

Context matters: Zen’s early rhetoric was shaped against scriptural literalism and devotional accumulation. Bodhidharma, the legendary transmitter of Chan to China, is associated with a “direct pointing” tradition that treats doctrines as rafts, not destinations. The subtext is almost political: stop kneeling to external credentials and see the machinery of delusion at work in real time.

It also carries a warning. If “mind is Buddha” becomes a comforting slogan, it turns into yet another “somewhere else.” The point is practice: noticing, again and again, how the mind manufactures distance-and dropping it.
