Aging & Wisdom Quote by John Zorn

"As soon as you get a certain amount of attention, then everybody kinda wants to start taking pot shots at you. All your old friends that supported you don't support you any more"

About this Quote

Fame, in Zorn's telling, is less a spotlight than a firing range. The line has the blunt, street-level candor you hear from musicians who built a life in scenes where credibility is currency and success is suspect. "A certain amount of attention" is doing a lot of work: not stardom, not mainstream domination, just enough visibility to trigger the social immune response that polices who gets to be "authentic". The moment you cross that threshold, admiration flips into surveillance, and criticism becomes sport.

"Pot shots" is a perfect phrase here because it implies both laziness and distance. These aren't principled artistic disagreements; they're cheap hits taken from the safety of the crowd, a way for others to feel sharper, purer, more underground, without having to risk building anything themselves. Zorn doesn't name the attackers, but he doesn't need to: the subtext is that creative communities often maintain their identity by defining an enemy, and success makes you an easy target.

The second sentence hurts more because it's domestic. Old friends aren't simply absent; they reverse their loyalty. That turn suggests resentment, envy, or a sense of betrayal: if you "made it", you must have compromised, or you must now belong to a different class. Coming from Zorn, a figure synonymous with downtown New York's experimental ecosystem and its tight-knit, reputation-driven networks, the remark reads as a warning about the politics of attention. Recognition doesn't just change how strangers see you; it reorganizes your nearest relationships, turning support into a test you suddenly can't pass.
