Forster’s line is a compliment with teeth: beauty, he suggests, should wear its power as if it were an accident. The “little surprised” look isn’t about wide-eyed innocence so much as plausible deniability. If beauty appears self-aware, if it “accepts her position as her due,” it stops reading as a gift and starts reading as a claim. That shift makes observers uncomfortable, because it forces them to admit beauty is a kind of social authority - one that can be wielded, negotiated, even exploited.

The subtext is less about aesthetics than performance. Surprise functions like etiquette: an outward sign that the beautiful person isn’t demanding deference, merely receiving it. Forster is diagnosing a cultural contract in which admiration must feel voluntary, not extracted. The “prima donna” is the nightmare figure here - not because she’s untalented, but because she knows her value and behaves accordingly. In other words, she breaks the illusion that the audience is in control.

Context matters. Forster, writing in and about rigid English social worlds, was obsessed with how class, manners, and sexuality get managed through tone and posture. “Beauty” becomes another form of rank, policed by the same rules that police “good breeding”: you’re allowed to have advantages, but you’re expected to pretend you didn’t notice. The irony is that the demand for surprise is itself a demand - a way of keeping beauty charming, nonthreatening, and ultimately available to other people’s comfort.
