Creativity Quote by Kenneth Noland

"Because of this the representation I'm interested in is of those things only the eye can touch"

About this Quote

Noland’s line is a neat paradox that doubles as a manifesto: the eye “touches,” but only if the work gives it something tactile to do. Coming out of mid-century American abstraction, he’s pushing back against painting-as-window and painting-as-confession. What he wants is not a picture of a thing, but a representation of seeing itself - the brushwork reduced, the surface clarified, the composition engineered so the viewer’s attention lands on edges, intervals, pressures of color. In other words: sensation without anecdote.

The phrasing “because of this” hints at an argument already underway in his mind, likely the long debate inside postwar art about what painting is allowed to be after photography, after Cubism, after Abstract Expressionism’s big theatrical psyche. Noland, associated with Color Field painting and the Washington Color School, takes the heroic swagger of Pollock-era gesture and swaps it for a cooler kind of intensity: targets, chevrons, bands. Not less feeling - feeling relocated into perception.

“Those things only the eye can touch” also smuggles in a rebuke to language. The eye’s “touch” is immediate, pre-verbal, hard to paraphrase without flattening. He’s defending a realm where meaning is physical but not literal: the vibration between two hues, the way a hard edge can feel like a snap, the way stained color can seem to sit inside the canvas rather than on top of it. The subtext is faith in looking as an experience with its own integrity - and a demand that viewers meet the painting on its terms, not as a story, not as a symbol, but as a direct encounter.
