"Being right too soon is socially unacceptable"
About this Quote
The intent is less about smug prediction than about the costs of premature clarity. Early correctness threatens status hierarchies (why didn’t the leaders see it?), economic interests (who loses if we change now?), and collective self-image (we don’t want to be the kind of people who were wrong). So the “right” person becomes inconvenient, even rude. Social systems often treat foresight as a form of accusation.
As a mid-century science fiction writer, Heinlein is writing from inside the laboratory of “too soon.” Science fiction’s job is to speculate, and speculation is inherently antisocial when it forces people to reckon with uncomfortable trajectories: war, technology, sexuality, governance. His era, too, prized conformity while being reshaped by nuclear anxiety and rapid innovation; the future was arriving fast, but consensus lagged.
The subtext is a critique of consensus culture: we don’t reject new ideas because they’re false; we reject them because they arrive before we’ve built the emotional and political infrastructure to live with them. The line flatters the visionary, sure, but it also cautions them: the penalty for early insight isn’t being disproven. It’s being treated as intolerable until history catches up.
